Android is a word that had captured world's attention within a short period of time. Android that extended the functionality of the devices has reached the most fields of IT. The wide applications of Android in devices such as smart phones paved a way for its rapid growth.

Android is a operating system which is based on Linux. Google and Open Handset Alliance developed android for mobile devices. Android was founded by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. It was on October, 2003 in Palo Alto, United States. On august 17, 2005 android was acquired by Google. Later android became platform for several smart phones and tablet computers. It includes an operating system based upon Linux, a GUI, a Web browser and many applications that can be downloaded.

HTC dream was the first phone to run Android which was released on 22 October 2008. Droid font family made by Ascender Corporation designed Android logo. Google developed online software called Android Market for Android devices. Today there are more than 400,000 applications available for android. Google had offered several applications like Google voice, Sky Map, Finance, Maps Editor, Places Directory, Google Goggles, Google Translate, Google shopper etc. Android applications can only be accessed only if the user grants permission during the installations of the applications. AVG Technologies, Avast!, F-Secure, Kaspersky, McAfee and Symantec are some of the antivirus software for android software which are released by different security firms.

Android have undergone a numerous updates since its birth. Recently Android passed Opera to become number one mobile browser. A lot of software updates are also being provided by the company. Also a wide range of mobile phones with android are also becoming trend in the market. They are also planning to release netbooks with android operating systems. Many more milestones are waiting in history of Android in near future.
